This past Thursday February 22, 2024 Felicia Sanders, Coastal Bird Program Coordinator for South Carolina DNR presented about the fantastic work that has been done in tracking the migration of Red Knots.

This amazing bird, that is federally listed as a threatened species, every year migrates from as far as the southern tip of South America to the arctic circle and back. Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island are critical stop over points in this migration for feeding and gaining strength necessary to complete their journey.
Felicia and her team play an integral role in utilizing new radio and satellite tracking technology to gain insight integral to preservation of this beautiful creature and other shorebirds.
As the members and friends of the Seabrook Island Birders learned at her presentation, a key component of this research is a special cannon net required to capture the birds for banding and tagging. Felicia’s current net is over 20 years old and needs replaced. This net is only made in the United Kingdom and cannot be purchased by the SCDNR.

Seabrook Island Birders have set a goal of buying the SCDNR team a new net and other items to help with shorebird research. We want to thank those that have already contributed over $3,300 and pledged even more toward the purchase of a new net.
