Who’s ready for spring?
Warmer temperatures, longer days, and the excitement of spring migration! Well, exciting to a birder, anyway.
If you’re one of those people who look forward to migration, we want to share a wonderful tool to help you plan!
Based on years of data, The Cornell Lab and Colorado State University have provided excellent data on migration through their Birdcast website. But did you know there’s a way to look up the migration dates for your city or general area?
If you’re planning a trip this spring, and want to combine your travel with a little birdwatching, this is a great resource. For example, if I look at Charleston, SC, I see the peak migration dates are approximately April 23 – May 10, based on data from recent years. Scroll down a little further and you’ll see Ohio’s peak migration is April 30 – May 20.
According to BirdCast, “Knowing when the peak period of an area is can help inform both birding and conservation action. For example, it can help with making plans for visiting a particular area to try to maximize the chances of seeing large numbers of birds there, and it can also inform people what days it is most critically important to participate in turning out lights to reduce the collision risk and other hazards created by light pollution for migratory birds.”
