Recently, Seabrook Island Birders participated in a Learning Together opportunity at Kiawah Island’s Banding Station.

Every August through November, Aaron Given, Wildlife Biologist on Kiawah Island, sets up twenty-five 40’ mist nets on Captain Sam’s Spit where, over the next couple of months, he collects birds for banding, measuring, and weighing.  We scheduled our visit for October, to take advantage of the peak migration time for all sorts of songbirds including vireos, warblers, catbirds, chickadees, etc.

One of our SIB members, Jennifer Jerome, had this to say about the event.

“We started off with a pleasant walk along the beach, followed by a hike through the dunes and maritime forest. On the way, we saw the mist nets – one of which had a bird in it.”

“The banding station was full of activity, with measuring, weighing, banding and releases.”

“It was an exceptionally fulfilling morning, and a privilege to see those wonderful birds up so close.”

An exceptionally fulfilling morning for sure!
