How to report a distressed or injured bird

Seabrook Island Birders are not licensed nor trained to participate in bird rescue.

If you come upon or are aware of a distressed or injured bird, there are groups in the Charleston area with volunteers trained to help.Seabrook Island Birders are not licensed nor trained to participate in bird rescue.

The following is a list of pertinent contact information.

Raptors/Seabirds/Shorebirds:

Avian Medical Clinic at Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw SC,

Staff monitor these communications every day of the week, leave a message, typically they are available 9am-5pm, they have a network of trained volunteers who assist with capture and transport

These groups are a part of a network of volunteers listed by Keeper of the Wild a wild animal rescue organization in the Walterboro area, 843-636-1659, (keeperofthewild.org)

Any of these groups will assist with guidance. A photo and/or description of the location of the bird will expedite this process. Remember to include your best contact information if leaving messages with any of these organizations. The Avian Medical Clinic guidance is:

Do not handle the bird. You may get injured or injure the bird further and some birds require specialized treatment from a federally licensed, experienced practitioner. Do not offer food or water to the bird.  Wait for instruction from someone trained in the treatment of injured birds.
