Spend the morning birding on the Patriot’s Point Nature Trail. This flat trail is easy walking, out and back. With a stone surface, the trail winds through a wooded area between ball fields and a golf course. Although the wooded area is narrow, it’s quiet and you may hear and see a variety of birds. Near the end you will leave the woods and cross over the south part of Patriot’s Point Boulevard. Once you reenter the woods it’s a short walk to the end, where you will find an observation tower overlooking the marsh.
This trail is a renowned migrant trap, serving as a resting and feeding place for migrating warblers, vireos, flycatchers, and raptors. Expect to see and hear a variety of birds along the way.
For those interested, we’ll have an option for lunch at a nearby restaurant after birding. Or you may elect to visit Fort Moultrie, or take the ferry to Fort Sumter. The ferry to Fort Sumter (2.25-hour historic cruise, departs Patriots Point at 1:30 pm; cost starts at $28 before fees)
As always, be sure to bring your binoculars/cameras, hats, sunscreen and bug spray.
