The morning will be spent driving and walking the “roads” around Magnolia Cemetery. This historic cemetery was founded in 1850. It contains the burial sites of Civil War Generals and soldiers, the crew of the Hunley and many old Charleston Families. It is still a working cemetery but we plan to enjoy the many birds seen on the property. It is an eBird Hot Spot with 194 species reported including warblers, herons, spoonbills and hawks. We will be respectful of the graves and especially any new services occurring during our visit. This is SIB’s first visit to the site but anticipate significant walking for the group to “learn together”.
For those interested, we’ll rest with lunch at Lewis Barbeque.
After lunch we’ll bird another new site for SIB. The Romney Street Site is an old landfill along the Ashley River. Parking is along the street at the end of Romney Street. (Do not follow GPS taking you to the site as it will take you to the housing projects along one side). The Romney Street site is another eBird Hot Spot with 152 species reported. A visit in January resulted in 43 species including Wilson Snipes, American Pipits, 3 hawk species and 3 sparrow species. This site must be walked and the grass can be high in areas and over uneven terrain.
As always, be sure to bring your binoculars/cameras, hats, sunscreen and bug spray.
If you are not yet a 2025 SIB member, you can first become a member for only $15 by following the instructions on our website: http://seabrookislandbirders.org/contact/join-sib/. You may bring the form and your dues to the event. Or you may pay the Guest Fee of $10 ($5 for SIPC members).
Please register no later than March 3rd. All registrants will receive a confirmation letter the day prior to the trip. If you need to cancel, please let us know.
