On Thursday night, January 29th, members of the Seabrook Island Birders club gathered for a milestone moment – our 10th anniversary celebration. What began as a small group of likeminded people has grown into a vibrant connected community and the energy in the room reflected just how far we’ve come.
This event was wonderfully attended, buzzing with conversation, laughter and the shared joy of people who generally love birds, preservation, and each other’s company. Music, by Moto-grass, set a warm backdrop, while delicious food and drinks kept everyone mingling and smiling throughout the evening.

One of the highlights of the night was our raffle, filled with generous donations by our local community. We are very blessed to have so many talented people. Through the generosity of those attending the event we were able to add to our club’s donation fund.

We welcomed special guests, including Mayor Bruce Kleinman, Town of Seabrook Island, Rebecca Lyons, Executive Director of Seabrook Island Property Owner Association, and representatives of partner organizations. Together with TOSI and SIPOA, we thanked Seabrook Island Club, Audubon, SC Department of Natural Resources, Camp St. Christopher and the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program, Coastal Expeditions, and Sea Island Conservancy for their important contributions to our club’s growth.

Our sustaining leadership team received special recognition for their key contributions:
- Mark Andrews, Bob Mercer, and Lesley Gore for Shorebird Stewards.
- Melanie and Rob Jerome for their commitment to the Bluebird Society.
- Ed Konrad for establishing our Programs framework.
- Walter Brooks for developing the club’s administrative structure.

But perhaps the most meaningful moment came when we recognized our founding members. Their vision, dedication, and passion laid the foundation for everything Seabrook Island Birders has become. Honoring them reminded us that communities like ours don’t just happen – they grow from the heart and commitment of people who care deeply. Our founding members are Nancy Brown, Flo Foley, George Haskins, Dori Helms, Marcia Hider, Donna Lawrence, Charley Moore, Dean Morr and Judy Morr.

Ten years in, we are stronger than ever. Here’s to the birds that bring us together, the friendships that keep us coming back, and the next decade of watching, learning, and protecting.
