Happy Valentines Day to (bird) lovers everywhere! Doves, cardinals and lovebirds (a type of parrot) come to mind when people think of birds and love together. But ornithomancy is a practice dating to ancient times when Greeks and Romans used it to interpret their bird sightings and get a glimpse into the future.
According to ornithomancy, single women looking for love on Valentine’s Day should turn to birdwatching to find out who they will marry. The practice of reading signs from birds dictates that the first bird an unmarried woman sees on Valentine’s Day is an omen of her future husband’s character.
Valentine’s Day: let a little bird tell you what your romantic future holds in The Telegraph was originally written in 2010. Audubon quoted it in What Valentine’s Day Birds Can Tell You About Your Love Life in 2016. Read the article to see what your fate would be if you first see a Goldfinch, a bird of prey, a nuthatch or some other bird.
Whether you believe the “science” or not, Seabrook Island Birders hope you have a great day and see some of those favorite birds you love.
