Join SIB for a Beyond our Backyard visit as we try birding in downtown Charleston. We first will explore Hampton Park, one of the City of Charleston’s largest parks. The park features beautiful flowers and walking trails with reviews mentioning the well maintained property and restrooms. Recent eBird lists report nesting Green Herons, Canada Geese, Mallard and Muscovy Ducks as well as smaller birds such as Chimney Swifts, Great Crested Flycatchers and Brown Thrashers. We will begin our birding from the parking area near 10th Avenue and Mary Murray Drive and walk around the pond and other paths as the bird activity guides our way.
After Hampton Park, we will proceed to White Point Gardens along the Charleston Battery. After parking, we will gather at the Gazebo at White Point Garden. Several eBird lists mention the nesting Black-crowned Night Herons and Yellow-crowned Night Herons that frequent this park. Besides the expected Northern Cardinals, Boat-tail Grackles, the proximity to the Charleston Harbor may result in gulls, terns or egrets.
We will review our experience while we avoid rush hour traffic by dining at Lewis Barbeque on Nassau Street.
