SIB member Susan Markham shared this with us: “A few years ago, after a winter storm, I had a water pipe break. I was using it to do water changes in my koi pond. I started using a garden hose in the meantime. After a few months I started loosing koi, one by one. I realized it was always after I did a water change. I immediately got my water pipe fixed and the problem went away. I thought, if my koi were affected by the garden hose water, what was it doing to my birds? Now I fill up a watering can inside the house to fill up my birdbaths.”
Using a water hose is a convenient way to clean and refill a bird bath. But is it safe?
