I think our Eastern Bluebirds are confused? They’ve begun building a nest in their box. I cleaned it out when we returned to SC in mid-October and this week we’ve seen them entering a few times and starting a nest. Any explanation?

Answer:

Interesting behavior. “Our” EABL don’t migrate. Others come to spend the winter. The “visitors” may be checking out potential nesting sites. Bluebirds also use communal roosts during the winter.

A blog by thewoodthrustsshop.com titled “Fall Bluebird Activity” speculates this behavior is a pair bonding behavior not a nesting attempt.
