Learn all about the Red-cockaded Woodpecker from Matt Lerow’s great presentation.
One of the great things you will learn is that the Red-cockaded woodpecker was listed as endangered in 1970 and was among the first species protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Following over 50 years of conservation efforts, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service downlisted the bird from endangered to threatened in 2024, indicating recovery rather than extinction. Matt with SCDNR plays a significant role in this conservation effort.
